Five timeless design principles for every workplace to consider

When it comes to designing your office, to achieve maximum return on investment, you need to make sure that your design won’t exceed its best-before date in five years’ time.

Here our experienced commercial office designers share some of the timeless design principles they follow to ensure any office remains both modern and flexible yet functional for years to come

Sustainability as a timeless design principle

An ever-important subject, sustainability comes hand-in-hand with ‘timeless design’. Including furniture and other aspects in your design, by choosing sustainable items, not only will your workspace be around for longer, but also you are making a conscious decision to help the world become a better place. Trends are rarely long-lasting, hence they get called a trend. Choosing items that are on trend, however, will mean that in a few months’ time, you will want to change that for the next trend. This is neither a sustainable practice nor getting good value for money.

Functionality as a timeless design principle

The importance of design is making sure that while it looks good, it is also fully functional and useful. There is no point, as our designers can help you with, choosing furniture that is impractical however good it may look. In the long run, you could regret your decision, and again would mean that you don’t really achieve that value for money. Making sure that your furniture serves a purpose and is flexible for your employees needs – whether it be for relaxation or storage will help you evaluate how useful it actually will be to have in your office.

Quality as a timeless design principle

This may seem obvious but low-quality items don’t last for very long and that’s in between regular replacements and cheaper appearances. Whilst you may have to pay a little more for a higher quality item, knowing that it will last longer not only gives you peace of mind but also gives you greater value for money.

Progressive as a timeless design principle

Make sure that you don’t choose furniture that looks as if it is a decade behind. Whilst it can be hard to think about what will be used in the future – by opting for pieces that your staff will enjoy using and that fits in with your branding, your furniture should remain timeless and enjoyed by your staff.

Use your office’s unique features to your advantage

By making the most of any natural lighting, or natural features your space has, your office can remain modern but timeless. This also helps save money as it helps make the most of what features you do have in your space.
