Work is Where the Tech Revolution is at

by Maciej Markowski | CEO & Co-Founder | SpaceOS

Technology changes the world of work in two ways: by making us do old things better & faster, and by allowing us achieve completely new things. The latter is of course much more interesting.

PowerPoint turned us into efficient presentation machines (gone are the days of entire graphic departments churning out pie charts & graphs), MS Word alleviated the excruciating pain of making a typo in a document you can’t correct and email allowed shortening memo exchanges from days to hours or even minutes.

It’s only Slack however that changed the nature of written communication and availability of the company knowledge. It’s the video conferencing that made the world small and allowing ‘cross-ocean trust building’ (apparently we trust those we see much more).

It seems there’s much more that can undergo that serious change right now. Some of the things will just be that much more convenient. Take using your phone as a remote control for meeting room booking, submitting support tickets, opening doors, ordering food, finding people… It’ll alleviate so many of the daily annoyances. But the big change will come from new channels of communication & from data. The typical office building landlord has almost no connection to its tenants. As one you may know the head of real estate or company’s facility manager, but have no way of reaching the individual employees. You don’t really know what works and what doesn’t, what is used and which spaces lay abandoned.

Enter workplace app. Suddenly you see all the support tickets submitted by individual building users, you see their categories and how quickly they’re solved. Through one click surveys you’re able to gather feedback and through push notifications you can communicate all the great things that are going in the building and in the neighbourhood. Connecting retailers with tenants gives you data on people purchases and typical behaviours – you may learn who to invite to take over that empty space by the entrance. Access control gives you an idea of people flows. For the first time you feel the fog is lifting and you can form meaningful connections with the end users – your real clients after all.

Coworkings globally are using these tools for years now, it’s time for corporate real estate. And we haven’t even mentioned sensors…!
