What is human centred design and why is it important

Humans – the centre of the business world. Not only do we make businesses work and prosper, but we need interactive spaces to work in and to develop in both personally, and for the ever needed evolving of the business.

Not least, a nice and comfortable environment to work from that has different spaces and is inclusive for all. As businesses realise the value of attracting and retaining top talent, there’s been a movement to create a more human-centric workspace.

What is human-centred design?

Essentially, human-centred design is about focusing office design around the needs and wants of the people who use the space.  It is a concept that is based on not only productivity but also in equal measure, well-being and the comfort of employees. Designing an environment where employees feel energised, inspired and happy requires a creative approach to make sure that the needs of your people are sufficiently met while not compromising on the overall look of the space. With this approach, it will never be a one-size fits all, because we’re humans – all different in some way, yet the same.

Why is it important?

Staff who feel truly wanted and appreciated will reward you with loyalty and hard work. This blended with a new office space that meets the previous issues that they had had will reiterate how much you value them. Plus, their appreciation, and the new space itself, will boost productivity to new levels.

Our Define tool is a workplace consultancy that can help you figure out the needs of your staff. Their engagement in this is more likely to make the design human-centred, as you are involving them in the process and discovering their needs. Read more about this here.

Our Parker Technical Services brief wanted a space that no only aligned with the company values, but also encouraged better team working. By using our Define tool, we could drill down in their needs, and ensure that the space we put forward was a human-centred design.

Similarly, our invisible systems case study shows how our design team created a vibrant collaborative, flexible,  working area, including meeting booths, collaboration tables and hot seating facilities.

If you are looking to get in touch about how you can make your office fit-out more human-centred, please do not hesitate to fill in our enquiry form below or ring us on 0161 246 2369.
