Turn the Day Purple

Let us turn the day purple!

Please help us to raise awareness as today celebrates Purple Day!

You may be thinking, where are the purple cakes and the stalls providing purple leaflets? Well, this year, we have decided to take on a different approach.

Epilepsy is a condition that people often know very little about. It is essential to understand the diagnosis and support everyone across the UK, with studies showing 87 people diagnosed per day.

We want to help spread awareness because having epilepsy should not stop someone from achieving something, whether it is a job, favourite hobby or just day-to-day life. It is essential to consider whether epilepsy affects their work depending on seizures and what or how often these may occur. Reducing the risks of people with epilepsy having a seizure at work can be provided by employers.

The following provide reasonable adjustments for individual workers with epilepsy:

1. Depending on what triggers the seizure, there are many ways of treating photosensitive seizures. One of these ways employers can adopt is to install LED lighting. LED lighting has an excellent reputation for its energy efficiency and bright solid-state lighting. They are also great for productivity in offices and easy to install.

2. Undertake an appropriate risk assessment, making reasonable workplace adjustments, and developing a care plan for the individual.

3. Well-controlled air conditioning will help those who have epilepsy where heating can trigger seizures and, in some cases, are provoked by tiredness or insufficient sleep.

4. Some sufferers may need a supervisor or mentor available to help seek medical attention when needed and to help them feel more confident in the workplace.
